The name derives from the colour and shape of the stalk which, when harvested, becomes reddish in colour and resembles the 'feet' of a pigeon.
Salvatore Martusciello's Piedirosso dei Campi Flegrei is characterised by its aromas of small red fruits, including blackberry, morello cherry and cherry.
Piedirosso finds one of its best expressions in the Campi Flegrei where, like Falanghina, it is grown on ungrafted roots. It is one of the oldest varieties of Campania cited by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia.
